VSAT Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. What is the satellite footprint? A. Web-Sat is specifically targeted at the Arabian peninsular and gives a strong and guaranteed signal throughout the Gulf Countries, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iran and the major Egyptian population centers.
(Some other local suppliers sell systems that are European or East Asian specification. These may only cover the Arab world by chance. They are at the edge of a footprint and give a weak signal. The satellites are low on the horizon and can be obscured by even low buildings. There is no guarantee that such systems will continue to provide coverage if the supplier changes satellites for any economic or technical reason.)
Q. Are you a 'gray importer'? A. No. We are a registered and fully trained distributor supplying systems that are optimized for high reception quality in the Arabian peninsular. These are not just European specification 'gray imports'.
Q. Can I connect a network? A. Yes, you can. Web-Sat is ideal for connecting small and medium-sized companies to the Internet. Very often it is not economic to obtain a leased-line and dial-up is too slow and unreliable for a company that uses e-mail properly.
Q. If I connect my network, can I control my users? A. Yes, you can. Using any number of available products, such as Microsoft's Proxy Server, you can limit or observe your user's use of the Internet, limit some to just e-mail, block others completely and so forth.
Q. Do I need a phone line for the outgoing data? A. No, you do not. Some early satellite systems only received data through the satellite and used a phone line for the outgoing data. Web-Sat is a new generation system and does not need any telephone lines at all.
Q. Can I keep my existing mail system? A. Yes, you can. (Unless it is something really weird.)
Q. Can use the system to connect two of my office networks together? A. Yes, you can. But remember that Web-Sat is optimized for Internet access, so the incoming data bandwidth is 10 times greater than the outgoing bandwidth. We have other solutions that may be more suitable or cost-effective. Please contact us for details.
Q. If I have a system in my office, can I and my employees use it from home? A. Yes you can, if you wish. If you have installed a system on your office network, then using standard Microsoft software products, which you probably already have, you can connect to your office network from home using a dial up modem. You are then connected to the network as if you are an office PC on that network and you can use all of the network facilities that the network administrator has configured for you. That could of course include accessing the internet via the Web-Sat system. Access in this way will be controlled by log-on name and password, so that only authorized persons can access the network . Access via a modem to your network will of course not be quite as fast as being on a PC actually in the office, but it will probably still be several times faster than a conventional dial-up ISP, and you gain the same price advantages, i.e. time is not limited. You will of course pay for the local telephone call at the same rate that it costs you to talk to someone in your office.
Q. Can I install several modems and supply a large site, such as residents on a compound? A. Yes, you can. This may be cheaper than wiring a local area network into the compound.
Q. Can I put several modems and be a mini ISP? A. Technically you can, but you should first seek legal advice. All Arab countries have laws regulating ISP's and you risk prosecution if you do not follow the regulations.
Q. Can use the system to set up an Internet Cafe? A. Technically you can, but you should first seek legal advice. Some Arab countries have laws regulating Internet Cafes and you risk prosecution if you do not follow the regulations.
Q. If I connect my network, am I risking hackers? A. Even if you connect a stand-alone PC to the Internet using a dial-up line, you are risking some sort of hacking attack. To prevent this, you should install a firewall. We will install a free firewall and free anti-virus software with your Web-Sat system to protect you from hackers. Perhaps you should put them on your home PC as well?
Q. Can I become a reseller? A. Suitably qualified companies and individuals can become resellers. Contact us for details.
Q. Can I use Web-Sat with an iMac? A. Not directly at this time. However an iMac on a company network that uses a Web-Sat system can use the Internet and mail connection, just like any other computer on the network.
Q. What if the standard package is not enough for me? A. We can put together special packages for special requirements. Contact us for details.
Q. Can I use Web-Sat with a laptop? A. Not directly at this time. However a laptop connected to a company network that uses a Web-Sat system can use the Internet and mail connection, just like any other computer on the network.
Q. How far can the dish be from the PC? A. For standard installations, 60 meters is the maximum. Please contact us if you have a special requirement.
